So, over here in NZ it is winter ... wet rainy winter ... so my last minute harvest where I chopped down all but one plant and hung them inside entire to dry has been drying really slowly (incidentally, the remaining plant is still growing strong) and after a few months I noticed that my hanging plants with all brown leaves had tiny new green leaves popping out of the stalk.

Is this normal, is it a good or bad sign, should I worry? It's the first time I tried drying entire plants and I'm not sure if I should wait until the entire stalk is dried out or if I should just rip off the brown leaves and put them into storage. Which makes for a better smoke?

sounds to me like the plant/stalk still has enough mosture maybe from humidity to "grow" new leaves ... could also mean that the main stalk still had enough sap in it to contune growing, still not sure how that would effect the outcome of the already dried leaves on the stalks. i think i'd rip off the ones that were already dry if they are indeed brown with no green tints showing.

ok anyone else got any ideas here ?
Jump on it ....
Cheers Veritai

Yeah, the stalks would probably have enough moisture to be responsible for the growing new leaves, they are less fat than they started out but still green stalk ... the leaves seem to be dry including the midrib but vary from a dark brown color with the odd browny-greeny bit to a nice reddish brown color. It's just humid enough to keep the leaves from getting crackly dry, I think they're staying in case, if that's the right term.

I don't think the new leaves are going anywhere though, they're crinkling up at the edges. Though that hasn't seemed to stop them trying to grow even newer, tinyer leaves.

I'm dying to try and get some into a tasty-to-smoke state ... but being patient, since I really liked the last little sample batch I sweated and flavored, and want to make something of no less quality than that.
