Well just got hit harder from the oposite direction and this batch threw in small hail to boot. This time some of the otto snapped off(self topped) and need to check the damage tomorrow for the others.Jeepers fricken chriminies(bein nice here).Reinforced my supports but they snapped near it.

Last year never had bent stem and this year it's like they can't stand up and the stalks are wasteing their time trying to find which way is up.

Mark in the amazon

Thats how I do it bbut I stand them up best I can then step on the ground . They will usually stand by theirselves then . It's lots of trouble but I'd put a slip knot around them and attatch them to a main line . Reason is mine keep falling once they start falling . They can only do this a few times and it startsd getting real hard on the roots . So preventing the second fall is very important if you can .

One thing I learned last year was it's better on the roots to stand them back ASAP . Reason thats true here is because the ground drys so fast it really breaks roots if you let it dry much then stand them up . If the ground did dry or you could hear the roots breaking I'd water them good to soften up the dirt around the roots .

Mark

Very sorry to hear that dude !! Went through that big time last year and they kept falling . So this year at the first sign of falling I braced mine . I lucked out I guess but it's worked great so far . I have a few leaners but nothing flat I have to stand back up .

Boys somethings just wrong with this picture here . Plants falling like this just never happened the 11 years I grew hybreads . I'm really thinking they bread them to stand and not fall . Maybe a little difference in roots for the hybreads than what the heirloom strains have I'm not sure . But somethings wrong to many plants falling over and that very seldom happened growing hybreads .

Lonnie,

Maybe it's the root system being too shallow? Plants with deep roots seldom fall over unless it's a hella wind. Just guessing here.

Good guess at least in my opinion . Something is causing it to happen quite often with the heirloom strains . Like you say if good roots it takes a heck of a rain to even lean them . And thats all I ever remember seeing with the hybreads . Never did we see this flat on the ground stuff and breaking plants . They might lean 45 degrees but that was about it .

I'm thinkin leaving the lugs on may have helped the Havana.I removed them so i could put a mountain of dirt around the plants but after thought the lugs would actually help brace the plant in high winds. These winds were severe both times trees down type winds.
Lonnie
I topped the Havanna a couple days ago and thinkin of harvesting it.I tried bringin one back up and it was crackin.

Do you think it's to early?I'm not even gonna be able to get at em to sucker and apply my goo.I don't care about yeild.

Gonna put a 6ft fence around the patch next year 8)

Thanks

The root sytems on the plants are in great shape and all stalks are 2+ inches diameter. The root ball never budged just got compressed hard on one side.

The winds during the two storms were stronger than i seen in the last 10 yrs.Could have been worse though, not far from here they got over golf ball sized hail.

Ma nature can knock me down but i'll get back up.Hope the plants have the same attitude i do

If I had to I would drench the ground around each plant and stand them . Even if it broke many roots they didn't stop growing last year . Everytime they fell I could see more root damage and would think " will they still grow " and they did .

Even if they never they would ripen on up . My Havana turned a good yellow last year so about ripness I'll ask this . Are they yellow from top to bottom ? If not I'd stand them and at least let them turn ripe . The greener Havana just wasn't much smoke wise . If permitted to grow untill ripe I really think you will love them .

Soaking the ground will loosen up the soil and do lots less root damage standing them . Best of luck dude .
