That's another flaw in the studies. But it's not about science. For scientists it's about government grants and for politicians it's about control.

Anyone heard of people who claim their asthma is really bad when they aren't smoking, and clears up when they start smoking again?

my wife has asthma among other things, and a smoke seems to help open her up better than the inhaler from the doc...

I do really and I can climb any mountain and run a 30 mile marithon and I swear smoking makes it all possable

i think a big part of that is being active every day...
some years ago i fell nearly 40 ft
doc wouldnt even give the wife odds on my making it for the first 3 days.
on the 5th day wife came in to hear the doc reaqming the nurse staff on "how do you lose a patient that isnt even ambulatory?" (some of the gals were in tears, soit must have been bad)
she told him he didnt know her husband, where was the closest spot he could get a coffee and a smoke?
THEY FOUND ME! in the sunroom with coffee and bummed smokes!
then the doc wanted to know how long i smoked, cause there was no sign of it in the x-rays? at that time i was a 3 pack a day guy and smoked for about 15 years
the past year or so that i have been less physically active i am really feeling it
but with all the injuries, even most working doses of morphine dont do me much good. but good old nicotene helps a lot of days!

couldnt find the good book, but this less informative herbalry lists for tobacco...
dried leaves smoked as a mild narcotic, poultices used for sprains, infected cuts and bites, bee stings.
juice is applied for relief of neuralgia, and wet leaves offer a quick cure for hemorrhoids.
research has revealed a chemical in the leaves inhibits some tumors and an excelent insecticide can be made from the fresh or dried leaf.

Three people never to trust.

an economist
a weather man
a scientist looking to keep his grants

make that 4:
ANY POLITICIAN!

EDIT: Sorry it got so long, but have to add.
have been smoking since about '68 and have not had an actual "illness" such as the flu, for at least 8-10 years
dad smoked, g-dad chewed. pop died of an annurism (sp?) g-dad died of throat cancer, which the docs DIRRECTLY BLAMED on a burned throat from a bowel of too hot soup.
mom on the other hand never smoked, avoided fats, (us men-folk lived on bacon fat fried stuff) and she is the one with 5 heart surgeries, cholesterol problems etc!

Hi --

oldemagics, I'm glad to see this thread open up again and your post wasn' too long at all.

I started this thread because while the health detriments of tobacco are being tumpeted from the walls of the castle daily, no one ever says anything about the health benefits and how can you judge the goodness of something without both the cons AND the pros?

Typical conversation I have now with anti-smokers =

Them: "You should stop smoking, it's bad for you."

Me: "Actually, tobacco is a medicine that cures many ills."

Them: "I know that's a lie! Tobacco is bad, everyone knows that!"

Me: "Have you ever seen a government-sponsered study on the health benefits of tobacco use?"

Them:"ummmm....no."

Me: "So, you don't really know what benefits tobacco might bring a tobacco user, do you?"

You are assuming that the person you are talking to is rational and can hold a reasonable argument. The typical conversation I have with an anti ends up with a whole can of WHAARGGARBLE...

Smoking is:
Preparedness!
I am told that nicotine is a poison. A RN friend of mine states that it kills the germs in your nose and throat and protects the smoker from bacteria, viruses etc... it kills them off.

Okay, with the world like it is. Terrorists are using biological weaponry... well the bacteria and viruses aren't so effective when nicotine is present to kill off the critters as they enter your nose and mouth. Even our eyes, are somewhat protected, how often do you get smoke in your eyes?

See, it is part of my contingency plans for emergency preparedness.... smoke more, be protected!
So, I hold on to my guns, my religion, and my tobacco to protect me!

IX. Unique characteristics
NOTE: Current smoking has been shown to be protective for osteoarthritis although it is unknown if this is due to the physiological effects of smoking on collagen, bone and cartilage tissue or if it is due to some unmeasured surrogate factor.
Is this why my wife likes to smoke. she has been disabled with severe O A sense 1996. lee guess i lost the link google will show it again I hope lee http://www.cdc.gov/arthritis/ arthhritis>

Hi -

Thanks smbd! I found it in the text on this page

http://www.cdc.gov/arthritis/basics/osteoarthritis.htm

So where's the follow up study on that evidence? Oh, they only fund studies that find BAD things about tobacco and not health benefits! Ohhh nooooo.....nothing at all GOOD about tobacco!

Apparently finding out good things about tobacco is a bad thing? Typical government reverse-thinking to reach a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Hi all
Just a little up date . My wife smokes a lot. or anyway burns up a lot of them. She likes to have one lit, near her. Any way It has been ayear or more since we bought a carton /pack of cigerettes. She has lost the smokers cough that she had for years. I told her to not look for it. I like it better with out having it. She has started to gain weight again, not much but she is worried about it. I said she looks fine /good/sexy.
So we are more convinsed ,that the chemicals in store bought cigerettes are the harmfull parts. She has her appititte back , no cough, no weight loss. The differance now is the chemicals. We thought at first it might be that she was smoking less. But on those days when she does smoke a lot, she still doesn't have the cough. Or lose weight .
So if cough is gone does that mean lungs are cleaner? Or throat is not as raw? Did the chemicals do it ? Or is the chemical free tobacco Healing??? Goberment study probably show it as fluke/querk/ unexplained mystery of life  lee

Hi --

smbdyiam, I've had this thought for a while. Let's say a person isn't allergic to tobacco, but to one of the 100's of additives they put in the comercial cigarettes? Then, smoking commercial cigarettes would give them allergic reactions (like coughs, runny noses etc.) whereas smoking straight tobacco would be fine for them.

I think a person is far more likely to be allergic to additives they put in the cigs than the tobacco.
